Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Soviet-made Christmas Cards.

316.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the steps, if any, taken to prevent Christmas cards manufactured in the Soviet Union from reaching the Irish market.

I have not received any complaints in regard to imports into this country of Christmas cards manufactured in the Soviet Union. The latest available statistics for the year to September 1979 do not indicate any such imports.

The question of imposing control on the importation of the items in question has not therefore arisen. In any case any action in this regard would be a matter for the EEC Commission to which a documented case would need to be presented; a member state is not normally empowered to take unilateral action.
