Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - British Forces in Northern Ireland.

333.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make representations to the British Government regarding the current activities of British forces in west Belfast and Derry who beat up innocent persons as a form of reprisal when rioting occurs.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs has availed of contacts with the British Government to ensure that they are fully aware of the concern that the activities of the security forces in Northern Ireland should at all times be carried out with full respect for the legal and human rights of those with whom they are dealing.

It will be appreciated that representations in relation to specific instances of ill-treatment are likely to be more effective in those cases where they are based on precise details of the relevant facts and circumstances.
