asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware that employment prospects in the felling and extracting of timber are not being made available to unemployed persons, that this work is being offered to self-employed persons from outside the State and if he will make a statement on this policy in relation to the obligations of the Government under the national understanding 1979.

Harvesting of wood from State forests, in so far as it is undertaken by the Forest and Wildlife Service, is carried out by the service's own work force who are resident within the State.

The major proportion of wood from State forests is harvested by purchasers who utilise their own manpower resources over which I do not exercise control.
