Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bank Credit for Farmers.

131.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the severe difficulties presently being experienced by farmers in the development category who are finding it impossible to get bank loans and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised that the main banks are giving priority to the working capital and non-postponable development needs of farmers, and that such needs are being accommodated, where possible, within the overall credit guideline. The Deputy will also be aware of the recent decision to allow the ACC engage in up to £25 million foreign borrowing in EMS currencies for on-lending for agricultural development purposes.
