Vol. 318 No. 1

Written Answers. - Income Tax.

464.

asked the Minister for Finance, in relation to the estimate outlined on page 5 of the Interim Report of the Government-ICTU Working Party on Taxation of January, 1980 that tax on wage and salary income of employees accounted for about 70 per cent of total income tax receipts in 1977-78, if he will give the up-to-date percentage estimated for 1978-79.

Statistics which would enable the information requested to be given are not yet available but are being prepared.

asked the Minister for Finance the tax paid by directors of close companies through the PAYE system in respect of 1977-78 and 1978-79.

Statistics relating to the amount of tax paid by directors of close companies are not available. The amount so paid has been estimated at £33.5 million for 1977-78. The corresponding estimate for 1978-79 would be of the order of £40 million.

467.

asked the Minister for Finance the extent to which the 1978-79 receipts from farmers and other scheduled tax payers arising from the Post Office dispute in 1979 have been collected by the Revenue Commissioners during the month of January.

It is assumed that Deputy Desmond's question relates to the backlog in the assessment and collection of Schedule D income tax for the financial year ended 31 December 1979. To bring this area of work up to date will take at least some months. It would not be feasible until much later in the year to estimate the amount of arrears of this tax collected in a particular month.
