Vol. 318 No. 7

Written Answers. - Visual Aid Scheme.

63.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total sum of money paid to secondary schools under the visual aid scheme in respect of the financial year 1979; (b) the total number of schools who benefited in (i) Dublin city, (ii) Dublin county, (iii) the rest of the State; (c) the total number of schools whose claims were rejected in (i) Dublin city, (ii) Dublin county, (iii) the rest of the State; (d) the approximate date at which Imlitir 10B/79 was dispatched to all schools; (e) the number of schools whose claims were rejected because they arrived too late at the Department of Education; and (f) the special provisions he intends making for schools, who could not lodge their applications in time owing to the protracted postal strike.

In 1979 a total of £97,596 was paid by way of grant under the scheme for the purchase of audio visual aids for secondary schools. Of the 245 schools concerned 78 were located in Dublin city, 24 in County Dublin, and 143 elsewhere.

It was not possible to sanction grants in 37 cases where applications were received after the total provision for the year had been committed. Three of these schools were in Dublin city and one in County Dublin.

The terms of the scheme preclude applications being considered other than in the financial year in which the equipment is purchased.

Imlitir 10B/79 issued to schools in September 1979. Applications were dealt with in order of receipt. No application was rejected on the grounds that it was received late.
