Vol. 318 No. 9

Written Answers. - Sale of Cyclamate.

344.

asked the Minister for Health if cyclamates are carcinogenic and if they are on sale here for any purpose.

Experiments on rodents fed with cyclamate, which were carried out in 1969, indicated that the substance was possibly carcinogenic. However, further experiments carried out on rodents in recent years have cast doubts on the results of the earlier work. There is no evidence to show that cyclamate is carcinogenic in other species, including man.

Cyclamate is used in the manufacture of some medicines which are on sale in this country.
