Vol. 318 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport Scheme.

18.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the dissatisfaction of the public with the quality of the CIE buses operating the school transport scheme in County Waterford, particularly those serving Kilmacthomas vocational school and Ballinameela national school, and if he will ensure that these buses are put in a proper state of repair, or replaced.

I do not accept that there are valid grounds for general dissatisfaction with the quality of CIE buses operating the school transport service in County Waterford. The vehicles are serviced regularly and are required to meet approved standards of roadworthiness.

In the past, however, there were some disruptions in respect of the morning transport services to the schools in question. However, in recent times there has been a marked improvement in the standard of the services.

Has money been allocated this year for the replacement of school buses which may, through natural attrition, be in the position that they are not capable of being used?

There is a total provision in the Estimates. Unfortunately, it is not a matter of financial provision but rather that the position has been compounded by the fact that there is an industrial dispute about the place where the buses should be assembled.
