Vol. 318 No. 9

Written Answers. - Pesticide Residues.

326.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if a system exists for checking on the presence of pesticide residues in fresh vegetables on sale here and if any reports have been received of unacceptable levels of pesticide residues.

The European Economic Community's directive on pesticide residues on and in fruit and vegetables, which has been implemented here by the European Communities (Pesticide Residues) (Fruit and Vegetables) Regulations, 1979, involves a checking system to ensure compliance with the levels laid down. My Department are at present engaged in establishing such a system.

Over a number of years surveys involving analysis for pesticide residues in a wide range of foodstuffs, including fruit and vegetables, have been carried out by the health boards. No reports of unacceptable levels of pesticide residues in fresh vegetables have been received.
