Vol. 319 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools Establishment Policy

29.

asked the Minister for Education if he will outline his policy in regard to the establishment of multi-denominational or non-denominational State-operated schools at primary and post-primary level.

I am satisfied that the existing arrangements for the establishment of schools in accordance with the official regulations and procedures are suitable and adequate to all requirements. Where an established demand for multi-denominational schools exists it is processed in accordance with these official regulations and procedures.

Can we take it from the Minister's reply that he has finally buried the suggestion made by the former Taoiseach, Deputy Lynch, that pilot multi-denominational school projects might be established by a Fianna Fáil Government?

Since I took office I have encouraged the establishment of a multi-denominational school and given them every help. The initiative came from the group of parents who established that school. This was in accordance with the policy of the then Taoiseach referred to by Deputy Horgan and in accordance with my own policy.

Is the Minister saying that while prepared to encourage other people's initiatives, which he has done and which is not in dispute, he is not prepared to take any initiatives himself?

I followed the usual procedure for the establishment of primary and post-primary schools.

The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper for the next sitting day.
