Vol. 320 No. 1

Written Answers. - Waterford Crime Rate.

210.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the crime rate in (i) Waterford city and (ii) Waterford county, in each of the years 1970, 1975 and 1980.

211.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the public anxiety regarding increasing vandalism in Waterford city.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 210 and 211 together.

Garda statistics relate to Waterford Garda District and to Waterford/Kilkenny Garda Divisions. Waterford Garda District includes Waterford city. The Waterford/Kilkenny Garda Division includes both counties and it is not possible without a considerable expenditure of staff-time to give separate crime figures for each county as certain areas of one county are under the administration of a Garda District in the other county. The figures for Waterford Garda District and for Waterford/Kilkenny Division are as follows:—

The Garda authorities are aware of the concern at the increased level of vandalism in Waterford city. They have informed me that every effort is being made to curb such offences having regard to the overall demands on their resources.
