Written Answers. - County Council Lay-offs.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the situation whereby due to a cut-back in funds, Roscommon County Council propose to lay-off a substantial number of manual workers many of whom are on the Register of Pensionable Servants and if he will give details of: (i) the number of employees laid off and proposed to be laid off in each district engineer's area, (ii) if statutory provisions for lay-offs have been complied with, and (iii) the likely duration of the lay-off.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of (i) redundancies, and (ii) lay-offs which have occurred in county councils since 1 January 1980 generally, the number of pensionable servants involved and the likely duration of lay-offs.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 234 and 237 together.

Decisions on the matters referred to in these questions are made by individual local authorities, having regard to all relevant circumstances, and it is not the general practice for them to forward information of the type requested to my Department.
