Vol. 320 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Situation in Yugoslavia.

12.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement assessing the present situation in Yugoslavia and the likely future course of events in that country.

I should like to take this opportunity to express the Government's sympathy to the Government and people of Yugoslavia in the present very serious illness of President Tito.

While there is of course great concern in Yugoslavia at the illness of President Tito, the atmosphere is one of claim and confidence in the future. The Yugoslav political system is designed to safeguard the stability of the country. The position of Yugoslavia as a neutral and nonaligned state is widely respected in the international community. I share, therefore, the confidence of the Yugoslav people themselves. In the continued stability and independence of their country.
