Vol. 320 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Weather Protection For Gardaí

9.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will provide sentry boxes or other appropriate cover at locations where gardaí, on protection duty, are exposed to the elements.

It is the policy of the Garda authorities to provide shelter facilities for gardaí at protection posts as far as practicable, having regard to the circumstances and requirements, including security requirements, of each case.

Could I ask the Minister is he aware that there are gardaí who have to operate in extremely inclement, conditions such as, indeed, the men who guard the gates of this House during all kinds of weather? Would the Minister be agreeable to do what is being done, and was done years ago, in various parts of the country, where appropriate kinds of boxes were provided?

The Deputy will be very glad to know that already the Garda authorities are is discussion with the Office of Public Works to provide shelter in the specific area which he mentions.

So that is already being done? Thank you, Minister.
