Capital expenditure for the improvement of the public library service has been sanctioned over the past ten years in the amounts set out in the table beneath. The loan charges arising from the borrowing involved in these and earlier library projects have been subsidised at the rate of 50 per cent by grants from An Chomhairle Learbharlanna. The cost of this subsidy, which amounted to £912,178 over the ten years in question, has been recouped to An Chomhairle from my Department's Vote.
Borrowing proposals for library improvements in 1980 will be decided very shortly and the local authorities concerned will be notified as appropriate.
