Vol. 320 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tidal Power Electricity Generation.

10.

asked the Minister for Energy if he has examined the feasibility of utilising tidal power to generate electricity and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is my intention that my Department will take a very active role in promoting research and development in the field of natural renewable alternative energy sources. I am at present undertaking a review of what is happening in various areas and their application to this country.

One of the areas of interest to us is tidal power. A pilot project underway in this country is examining the feasibility of utilising tidal power to generate electricity. Arrangements have been made by the Electricity Supply Board to have a site in the Shannon Estuary examined this year by an international tidal power expert who will make recommendations on the most suitable type and size of pilot installations to be set up there. This pilot scheme will then be used as the basis for a cost-benefit study.

I shall be closely monitoring this pilot scheme.

The Chair omitted to call Question No. 9.

Sorry, will the Minister answer Question No. 9?
