Vol. 321 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Home-Liaison Officers.

19.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any proposals to establish primary school home-liaison officers on a pilot scheme basis.

Home-school liaison teachers are already employed in the Rutland Street project on the education of the disadvantaged. I have no immediate plans to extend this scheme to other schools but I am having the general situation of the disadvantaged areas under continual review.

Can the Minister tell me if the home liaison officers have had any success in regard to the Rutland Street project?

The sum total of extra input in the Rutland Street project has been successful. The advance has been significant compared with areas which had not got this.

In view of that would the Minister agree that this matter should be tackled urgently? If it has been a success in one part of the city, throughout which the basic situation or the basic problems are the same, would the Minister not agree that this sort of scheme should be implemented extensively as a matter of urgency?

That is being considered.

When can we have some definite conclusions on it?

The Deputy will be meeting me with a deputation and I will have further information for him.
