Vol. 321 No. 11

Written Answers. - Clonmel Welfare Home.

44.

asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the facilities and range of services which will be available for the care of the aged at the New Centre, Morton Street, Clonmel, County Tipperary; the categories of persons to be catered for; the form of administration and medical assistance which will apply; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The type of home for the elderly which is being built at Morton Street, Clonmel, represents a departure from the standard welfare home. It is a good example of a health board trying new approaches to ensure a more effective and flexible response to the needs of the elderly who do not need institutional care but are unable to live independently at home. It will consist of 26 single and four double bed-sitters with bathroom and kitchenette facilities, plus six single bed-sitters for the more frail elderly attached to the central accommodation and convenient to the supervisor's flat.

I have asked the South-Eastern Health Board for final details of the arrangements proposed and I will communicate them to the Deputy as soon as they are received.
