asked the Minister for Justice (a) the total number of miles covered by the official cars assigned to each Minister and Minister of State in the period 1 January to 1 June 1980; (b) the increase or decrease between this mileage total and the mileage total for the five months immediately preceding 1 January 1980 in the case of each Minister and Minister of State who held office on 1 August 1979; and (c) whether total mileage is monitored from year to year in view of the need to conserve energy.

As I indicated to the Deputy in my reply to Questions Nos. 123 and 142 on 4 July 1979, it is impossible to lay down any hard and fast measures for the conservation of fuel in the use of official cars and it must be left to individual Ministers and Ministers of State to take account of the need to conserve fuel in the use of the official cars assigned to them.
