Vol. 322 No. 9

Written Answers. - Helicopter Purchase.

404.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in relation to the proposed acquisition of twin-engined helicopters if provision was made in last year's defence estimate, as stated by his predecessor in the defence debate, for the down-payment on such helicopers, and, if so, the purpose for which this has been used.

Provision was included in the Defence Vote 1979 for a down payment on the purchase of a twin-engined helicopter with a capability of flying at night or in reduced visibility. Tenders were invited with a view to purchase but as it was indicated by the manufacturers of certain aircraft in which the Defence Forces were interested that these would be phased out of production and replaced with newer models over the next few years, it was decided not to proceed with purchase. It is intended instead to arrange for the lease of a twin-engined helicopter this year.

The provision referred to also catered for the purchase of a training helicopter and was expended on this and the overhaul and maintenance of existing helicopters.
