Vol. 322 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumer Tribunals.

23.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to establish informal consumer tribunals.

The setting up of informal consumer tribunals would not necessarily, or in my view even probably, be a matter for me, though I would have an involvement to the extent that the relationship between such tribunals and the courts would have to be determined in the making of the arrangements under which they would operate.

The only statement that I am in a position to make is that certain consultations have been taking place between interested Ministers.

In view of the fact that this undertaking to set up what were called informal consumer tribunals was embodied in page 36 of the Fianna Fáil manifesto under the heading of Justice, would the Minister be specific as to what progress has been made with regard to carrying out that undertaking, apart from informal discussions of an apparently very nebulous nature?

The discussions, as I have already said, are taking place between the interested Ministers and, as I say, when these discussions are finalised—which I am sure they will be within the life of this Dáil—whatever guarantees were given in the manifesto will be implemented.

Will they be promised in the next election?

Not really, no.
