asked the Minister for the Environment the average annual salary of each of the following (a) local authority engineer and (b) local authority staff officer.

Incremental scales apply to the grades mentioned and information is not available as to the numbers of persons on different points of the respective scales. The scales applicable, with effect from 1 March, 1980, are as follows:—

Assistant County Engineer: £6,930 - £7,172 - £7,413 - £7,655 - £7,897 - £8,137 - £8,378 - £8,619 - £9,104 - £9,344.

Staff Officer (Grade V): £6,817 - £7,048 - £7,277 - £7,511 - £7,717.

Notes: (i) At present Local Authorities generally have three grades of permanent engineer viz. Assistant County Engineer, Chief Assistant County Engineer and County Engineer. The greatest number of engineers is at Assistant County Engineer level. Agreed arrangements for the introduction of a new structure of engineering grades, in place of the existing structure, are at present being implemented. (ii) There are three levels of staff officer in the local authority grading structure viz. Assistant Staff Officer (Grade IV), Staff Officer (Grade V) and Senior Staff Officer (Grade VI).
