Vol. 322 No. 9

Written Answers. - Examination Supervisors.

455.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total number of people appointed as intermediate and leaving certificate examination supervisors (i) in 1979 and (ii) in 1980; (b) the average remuneration by way of subsistence payments to supervisors in receipt of such payments in 1979; (c) the method by which supervisors are recruited and appointed; (d) the number who declined to take up their appointment and the proportion of the total number this represents; (e) the number of supervisors appointed in 1980, and the proportion of the total number of supervisors this represents, who reside (i) within five miles, (ii) between 5-15 miles and (iii) over 15 miles from their respective examination centres; (f) the number of teachers from (i) Athlone and (ii) Cavan recruited to act as supervisors in Dublin centres; (g) if he will indicate the nature of any changes made by him since 1 January, 1980, in the rule governing travelling and subsistence payments to supervisors, (h) the number and percentage of the total number of teachers supervising examinations in County Dublin this year who reside (i) more than five miles and (ii) more than 15 miles from their respective examination centers; and (i) if he will consider making a subsistence allowance to teachers living within five miles of a center who supervise for more than five hours a day.

A. (i) 1979—2,200 appointments; (ii) 1980—2,301 appointments.

B. £202.27.

C. All posts are advertised in the daily newspapers and selection is made from those whose applications are received by the closing date (16 January usually).

D. (i) 1979—151 (6.86 per cent of A (i) ) (ii) 1980—109 (4.74 per cent of A (ii) )

E and H. These figures are not available at present, and will not be for some time. If the Deputy wishes to table another question on the matter after the Summer Recess. I will be happy to supply the information at that stage.

F. No teachers were recruited from any particular district to act as superintendents in Dublin centers. Because of the distribution of examination centres vis-á-vis that of superintendents homes (residences) and because of the excess of vacancies in the Dublin area (City and County) over the number of eligible applicants from that area it was necessary to assign 295 additional superintendents to the Dublin area from other counties. Four applicants were Athlone based and two were Cavan based.

G. No change has been made in the regulations governing payment to superintendents of allowances in respect of subsistence and travelling since 1 January, 1980.

I. I have covered this point in reply to Question No. 308 by Deputy Edward Collins on Wednesday, 11 June, 1980.
