Vol. 322 No. 9

Written Answers. - Contributory Pension.

482.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when arrears of contributory pension, due for a dependent relative since 17 November 1978, will be paid to a person (details supplied) in Cork.

The person concerned was awarded a contributory old age pension of £26.30 a week, i.e. the maximum rate appropriate to a married man, with effect from 17 November 1978. The pension included an allowance of £10.25 which was the amount payable at that time in respect of his wife as an adult dependant under age 66 years.

A pension order book at the rate of £26.30 payable from 15 December 1978 was issued together with a payable order for £105.20 in respect of the arrears due for the period 17 November 1978 to 14 December 1978.

He subsequently claimed a higher rate of allowance in respect of his wife on the grounds that she had reached age 66 years. He was unable to furnish a birth certificate, however, as she was born in England. Following inquiries he furnished evidence of her age in December 1979 by way of a letter from the principal of the school which she had attended in Cork and her date of birth was accepted as 6 May 1913.

A pension order book payable from 4 January 1980 in respect of the increase in the rate of the allowance for the wife issued on 14 February 1980. A payable order for £73.10 in respect of the arrears due for the period 11 May 1979 to 3 January 1980 issued on 20 June 1980.
