Vol. 322 No. 9

Written Answers. - Surveillance Allegations.

20.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of allegations by a person (details supplied) in Dublin that members of the Garda Síochána were involved in surveillance on him; if he has investigated these allegations and if there is any truth in them; if the Garda are regularly involved, have been involved or will again be involved in similar situations and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The allegations are to the effect that certain named members of the Garda Síochána were hired by a private detective to conduct inquiries of a personal nature. The allegations are being investigated by the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the preliminary inquiries which have been made up to now have not produced any evidence to suggest that the allegations are justified. The investigations are continuing.

The Commissioner has informed me that there is no evidence available to him to suggest that gardai engage in activities of the kind referred to.
