Vol. 322 No. 9

Written Answers. - Crime Detection Equipment.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice if all equipment of a radio, computer, or other technological nature, designed with a view to improving the crime detection rate, and based in Dublin Castle, is and has been working satisfactorily in all respects; if such equipment has seldom functioned; if he will state the approximate cost of the equipment; and whether any special problems are being experienced in relation to such equipment.

I am informed by the Garda Commissioner that all Garda equipment in Dublin Castle of the type referred to in the question operates satisfactorily and gives rise to no particular problems. It is not the position that such equipment has seldom functioned. As is to be expected, faults occur occasionally but there is normally no delay in having such faults rectified.

The equipment, which has been installed at different stages over a number of years, is estimated to have cost approximately £61,000 at the time of purchase. Part of the equipment, which is rented, costs approximately £9,000 per annum.
