Vol. 322 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coolock (Dublin) Vandalism.

9.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the recent increase in the incidence of acts of vandalism against buses and motor vehicles in the Coolock are, Dublin; and if he will have extra gardai appointed to Coolock Garda station.

The Garda authorities report that every effort is being made to deal with the increased incidence of vandalism in the Coolock area, including acts of vandalism involving buses and other motor vehicles. Foot and mobile patrols pay special attention to areas where vandalism is prevalent and they keep a special check on bus routes and bus termini. As regards the Garda strength at Coolock, I am informed by the Garda authorities that the strength at the station was increased by two gardaí on 6 June and that the police needs of the area will be further considered according as additional manpower becomes available for assignment in the coming months.

Is the Minister aware that CIE are unable to serve the area due to acts of vandalism and would he agree that more foot patrols in the area would cut out these, thus enabling CIE to serve the area?

I understand there was a reduced bus service in the area for one day.

Would the Minister consider having plain clothes gardaí travelling on the buses?

I will bring the Deputy's suggestion to the attention of the Garda Commissioner.
