In accordance with Standing Order 9 of the Standing Orders of Dáil Éireann relative to public business, I have to report to the Dáil that a vacancy has occurred in the Office of Ceann Comhairle as a result of the death of Deputy Joseph Brennan.
: Tairgim go dtoghfar láithreach an Teachta Pádraig Ó Fachtna chun bheith in a Cheann Comhairle de thuras na huaire de réir na Buan-Orduithe. Ba mhaith liom a chur in iúl mar eolas don Dáil gur thairg an Teachta Ó Fachtna éirigh as oifig mar Chomhalta den Rialtas agus gur ghlac an tUachtarán, ag gníomhú dó ar mo chomhairle, an tairiscint sin le héifeacht ón 15ú lá de Dheireadh Fómhair, 1980.
I move that Deputy Pádraig Faulkner be forthwith elected Ceann Comhairle for the time being pursuant to Standing Orders. I might add, for the information of the Dáil, that Deputy Faulkner has tendered his resignation as a member of the Government and that on my advice the President has accepted the resignation with effect from today.
: On behalf of my party I should like to accept the proposition that Deputy Faulkner be temporary Ceann Comhairle. As there will be the election tomorrow of the permanent Ceann Comhairle, I will reserve my remarks on the appointment, without disrespect to the incumbent, until tomorrow.
: We in the Labour Party agreed through our Whips that a temporary Ceann Comhairle would be appointed without debate to enable the Dáil to commence its business. We do so without prejudice to whatever position we may adopt on the appointment of a permanent Ceann Comhairle and we anticipate that, as agreed, that procedure will be followed tomorrow.
