Vol. 323 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Consumer Price Index .

3.

asked the Taoiseach if, in relation to parliamentary Question No. 11 on 21 October 1980, he will give details of the monetary price changes, if any, that have taken place between mid-May 1977 and mid-August 1980.

: With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the information available in respect of actual price changes over the period mid-May 1977 to mid-August 1980. Actual price changes are available only for those items in the consumer price index where the identical varieties and quantities are priced in all areas and meaningful national average prices can be calculated.

Following is the statement:

Actual price changes between mid-May 1977 and mid-August 1980.

: Does the Minister deny that there has been a 70 per cent increase in prices since 1977 despite the promises in the manifesto that prices would be controlled?

: The increase is not abnormal.

: Is the Minister serious?

: From mid-May 1973 to mid-May 1976 there was an increase of 70.6 per cent.

: What about the manifesto promises?

: Does the Minister not think it is abnormal in view of the promises in the manifesto to keep down prices and to control them? There was also the promise to have monthly reviews published but we have not heard anything more about them.

: It would be abnormal only if Fianna Fáil kept their promises.

: Is the Minister saying that his Government are as good or as bad as the National Coalition?

: Ask Síle.
