Vol. 323 No. 8

Written Answers . - Teachers' Salaries .

66.

asked the Minister for Education the cost of implementing the recommendation of the interim report on teachers pay; and whether he proposes to implement it.

67.

asked the Minister for Education the total cost of implementing the interim report on teachers' pay as a percentage of the total amount voted for teacher salaries in the categories concerned in a full year.

: With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 66 and 67 together.

The costs of the recommendations contained in the interim report, if implemented, would be approximately £36 million in a full year. This would represent an increase of 13.1 per cent on the total allocation for teachers' pay and allowances.

Discussions have taken place with representatives of the teachers and managerial authorities organisations in relation to the report and a ballot is being held by the teachers' organisations among their members on proposals which emerged from such discussions. I do not wish to make any further statement in relation to the matter at present.
