asked the Minister for Education if he will state in relation to the appointment of the new director of the National College of Art and Design (i) whether the provisions of section 17 (7) and other relevant sections of the National College of Art and Design Act, 1971 were complied with; (ii) the date on which the procedure for the selection for the appointment concerned was notified to his Department for approval by the board under section 17 (8) of the Act; (iii) the date on which he gave his approval for the scheme; (iv) the details of the scheme he approved, including the composition and qualifications of any committee set up by the board to review applications for the post; and (v) whether the decisions of the selection committee in relation to the establishment of the short list of candidates for interview were confirmed by the board under section 21 (7) of the Act and the date of such confirmation.

: In relation to the appointment of the new director of the National College of Art and Design.

(i) the provisions of section 17 (7) and other relevant sections of the National College of Art and Design Act, 1971, have been complied with;

(ii) the date of notification to my Department by the board was 16 July 1980;

(iii) I gave my approval for the scheme on 31 July 1980;

(iv) I approved of the scheme determined by An Bord which provided for advertising the vacancy in the public press in Ireland and through the National Art Education Association in Washington DC and through our embassies abroad. The scheme provided also for a selection board, whose membership was as follows:

Professor J.J. O'Meara, chairman of An Bord;

Miss M.C. Gibbons, registrar of the college;

Mr. Alpho O'Reilly, head of design, RTE, and member of An Bord;

Mr. Bill Bolger, staff member of An Bord;

Miss Liz Rackard, student member of An Bord;

Mr. Seán Condon, chief executive of CTT;

Professor George Dawson, registrar, TCD;

Mr. J.J. Beljon, director, Royal Academy of Fine Art, The Hague, Netherlands.

(v) I understand that the decisions of the selection committee in relation to the establishment of the short list of candidates for interview were confirmed by An Bord under section 21 (7) of the Act on 30 June 1980.
