Vol. 324 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - O'Sullivan Report.

23.

asked the Minister for Education the action he proposes to take to implement the findings of the O'Sullivan Report.

Development of Youth Work Services in Ireland, the recently published report of the youth committee established by me under the chairmanship of District Justice O'Sullivan lists some 100 recommendations. These recommendations as well as relating to my Department, relate to vocational education committees, other Government Departments, local authorities and youth organisations.

I have already begun to implement some 17 of the recommendations directly relating to my Department and will be giving immediate consideration to the other recommendations when I have had the benefit of the views of the other parties involved.

Could the Minister give the House some information about the recommendations affecting his Department on which he is making progress and the amount of progress concerned?

I do not know if the Deputy has any specific one in mind. I am very happy that the Deputy has given me the opportunity — and if the Ceann Comhairle would not regard it as delaying the House — to give some information about this. I have already, in respect of those recommendations, implemented recommendation No. 5, which appears on page 19 of the report, Nos. 8, 13, 23, 31, 33, 47, 51, 53, 54, 57, 62, 65, 66, 73 and 89. I am sure the Deputy will accept that it is quite unusual that the Department should already have implemented quite a substantial number of the recommendations which appear in this report.

Are the recommendations which the Minister has instanced all of those which refer to his Department or are there any others which are still under consideration in his Department and have not yet been proceeded with?

All of those would be regarded as the most important ones. I am sure if the Deputy consults any of the youth organisations they will tell him that they are specially pleased at the manner in which the new policy of my Department towards youth is being implemented.

Could the Minister give the estimated cost of implementing the recommendations he is implementing?

I would want to have notice of that question. From the time the Deputy's colleague, Deputy Tully, was in the last Government the amount of money being spent by me on youth and sport has risen to $10 million as against £240,000 during Deputy Tully's time——
