Vol. 325 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Cork Fish Processing Industry.

385.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry when fish processing will commence in Castletownbere, County Cork; and if he will outline his plans for the development of the industry in the area.

A fish processing factory employing 21 operatives is already in production at Castletownbere.

An integrated catching and processing operation located on Dinish Island is due to enter the first stage of its phased development programme very early in 1981. Employment in this operation is expected to reach 35 by the end of 1981.

The establishment of a fishmeal plant on Dinish Island is at present under negotiation. Such an enterprise would contribute to the overall development of the fish processing industry not only in the port but also in the general south-west area.

My Department have a number of other proposals on hands for the provision of industrial enterprises on Dinish Island. While the establishment of such facilities is a matter in the first instance for private enterprise, every assistance and encouragement will be extended to any acceptable project.
