Vol. 325 No. 5

Written Answers. - Castlebar Market Charges.

326.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason no decision was taken by him on a request from Castlebar UDC in relation to increased market charges in Castlebar in view of the fact that the original letter was sent to his Department on 9 January 1980 and 7 reminders subsequently issued; and if he will now clarify his Department's intention in this matter.

The proposals of Castlebar Urban District Council to increase tolls and other market charges have been under examination in my Department in consultation with the Department of Agriculture.

The terms of the council's application have given rise to a legal difficulty with respect to the area of applicability of the tolls etc. and information received to date has been insufficient to establish by legal definition the extent of the market area. My Department are pursuing this aspect and the matter will be brought to a conclusion as soon as possible.
