Vol. 326 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

39.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided in the home of a fishing trawler skipper (details supplied) in County Dublin whose livelihood necessitates his being away on the west coast for the greater part of the year.

It is expected that service will be provided within the next six months or so.

40.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the proposals, if any, he has for the re-employment of the supervisors and staff at Carrick-on-Shannon telephone exchange, County Leitrim, in the event of that exchange going automatic; and if he is aware that a number of the staff have in excess of 20 and 25 years' service.

Full-time operating staff employed at Carrick-on-Shannon telephone exchange will, as they become surplus to requirements and in accordance with normal practice, be offered transfers to other exchanges where operating staff are required. Redundant part-time staff who wish to transfer will also be similarly facilitated as far as possible. I am aware that a number of the Carrick-on-Shannon staff have long service and the Deputy may be assured that my Department will give very careful and sympathetic consideration to the position of such staff.

Did the Minister think of redundant and unemployed people when he appointed a man who is a publican and a contractor to the position of postman?

That supplementary question does not relate to this question.

The Minister appointed a Fianna Fáil publican as a postman. It is a disgrace. They should hang their heads in shame.

The best man for the job always gets it.

Questions Nos. 41 and 42 are for written reply.
