asked the Minister for Education (a) the number of pupils attending primary schools at the latest date for which figures are available; (b) the average amount spent on each primary school pupil by the State during the last complete financial year; (c) the overall State expenditure on first level education during this period; and (d) the percentage cost this represents of the overall education budget.

The number of pupils attending primary schools for the year 1979-80 (the latest year available) was 547,422 and the average expenditure per pupil for the financial year 1979 (the latest year available) was £303. The overall estimated expenditure on first level education in 1979 was £166,095,789 which represented 37.2 per cent of the overall education expenditure.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total number of students in secondary schools at the latest date for which figures are available; (b) the average amount spent on each secondary school pupil during the last complete financial year; (c) the overall State expenditure on second level education during this period; and (d) the percentage cost this represents of the overall education budget.

The number of students attending secondary schools for the year 1979-80 (the latest year available) was 199,104 and the average expenditure, per student for the financial year 1979 (the latest year available) was £542. The overall estimated expenditure, on second level education in the financial year 1979 was £186,515,751, which represented 41.8 per cent of the total expenditure.
