Vol. 326 No. 8

Written Answers. - Free Travel Scheme.

178.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when he proposes to amend the relevant legislation to enable persons with British invalidity pensions who live in Ireland to avail themselves of free public transport on the same basis as those with Irish invalidity pensions.

The question of extending the free travel scheme to British invalidity pensioners living in Ireland does not require a legislative amendment. The difficulty in extending the scheme in the way proposed by the Deputy arises from the fact that there are significant differences in the qualifying conditions for Irish and British invalidity pensions.

In the circumstances I do not think that a change on the lines suggested would be warranted.
