Vol. 326 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Honours System.

3.

asked the Taoiseach whether he has given any consideration to an honours system along the lines of those in operation in other republics to honour citizens of outstanding achievement with a national decoration; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This matter is not under consideration at present.

Is the Taoiseach aware that we appear to be unique among republics in that we do not have a system for honouring citizens for outstanding achievements in commercial life, those prominent in trade union movements and so on?

We have Castlebar.

This matter is not under active consideration by the Government at present. My recollection is that, when Fianna Fáil put forward a proposal before, Opposition parties did not see their way to go along with it.

We have since been given a headline in Castlebar.

(Interruptions.)

It is the fattest file I ever came across in Foreign Affairs.

A hundred uncharitable replies spring to my lips but I will refrain from uttering them.
