Vol. 327 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rossaveel (Galway) Harbour Extension.

35.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry when it is proposed to commence work on the final major extension of the fishing harbour at Rossaveel, Connemara, County Galway; the estimated total expenditure involved; and when it is expected the work will be completed.

Last June the Minister set up an advisory committee to make recommendations to me on appropriate works in order of priority for the future development of Rossaveel Harbour as a fishery harbour centre. The committee have not yet furnished their report.

Until the Minister receives the committee's recommendations, and also engineering reports on whatever works are proposed for the development of the harbour, he cannot say when the works will commence or what the cost is likely to be.

I am sure the Minister of State will recall that the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry said he was going ahead rather soon with this proposal. He said how much money was available. Can the Minister of State give any indication when this committee will report? Is there likely to be a start made this year or next year or is it a very long term project? When we discussed this matter before, the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry was very sure about this.

I am afraid I cannot give the Deputy the information he wants because there is nothing in my brief about it.

It is a very big project.

I know Rossaveel quite well and it is a big project, I hope that any difficulties in the way of starting that scheme are eliminated before long. I cannot give the Deputy a starting date.

Is the Minister aware that Rossaveel is one of the six major ports designated for fishing in the country? Surely it is strange that the Minister cannot give us the information we request? What is the amount of money that has been allocated by the Department of Fisheries for Rossaveel?

There must be some more information in the Minister's brief.

There is no information about the amount of money to be spent in Rossaveel.

Question No. 36.

We have not got an answer to the question.

That is not my responsibility.

The Minister should know exactly where the money is being spent.

The Deputy must understand that there is an amount of money to be spent on it. The Minister has to wait for the committee's recommendations before he can allocate any money.

Are the people of Galway now to be told that no money is being spent on Rossaveel?
