Written Answers. - County Waterford School Repairs.

216.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of national schools in Waterford county and city earmarked for repairs; the name and location of each such school; and when work in each case is expected to commence.

The repair and maintenance of national schools are the responsibility of the boards of management of the schools who receive a capitation grant from the Department of Education for this purpose. The Office of Public Works have no responsibility in the matter. Grants for Improvement works are sanctioned by the Department of Education on the recommendation of the Office of Public Works which also give the boards of management the necessary advices to enable them to have the works carried out.

Proposals made by the school authorities for improvement works to the following schools in Waterford city and county are at present under consideration and reports will be made to the Department of Education at the earliest possible date. It will then be for the Department to consider the sanction of grants. Schools: St. John's Manor, Tramore Christian Brothers, Ballymacarbery, Lisduggan Boys', Clashmore, Kilrossanty.

Grants have been sanctioned by the Department of Education in respect of proposals for Improvement at St. John's Ursuline Convent, Carrickbeg and Currabaha national schools. The chairman of the boards of management of the schools will be given the necessary advices at the earliest possible date to enable them to have the works carried out this year. Major extensions are proposed for the following schools: Fenor, Killea Boys' and Portlaw Convent. It is too early to say when works will commence.
