Vol. 327 No. 10

Written Answers. - Stardust Fire Disaster Tribunal.

385.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the proposed procedure whereby people wishing to be represented at the tribunal of inquiry into the Stardust tragedy are obliged, if they wish to avail themselves of the free legal aid services, to choose from two specifically appointed legal representatives; if he is satisfied with this proposal; if he is further satisfied with the situation whereby the State, who may or may not also make submissions to the inquiry is also the agency which selects legal advisers for those making submissions; and, if so, if there is a conflict of interests.

I would refer the Deputy to the statement issued by the Government Information Services on 16th instant which sets out revised arrangements in respect of the free legal services being provided by the Government to the next-of-kin. The revised arrangements were drawn up following recent discussions with the Stardust Relatives and Injured Committee. I am satisfied that the revised arrangements represent an acceptable provision in this matter. I see no reason why it should be suggested that there should be a conflict of interest.
