Vol. 327 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Leitrim Road.

30.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the condition of the Carrick-on-Shannon/Frenchark road for a distance of approximately 1½ miles from Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim: and when it is proposed to make it passable.

I am informed that the present condition of the Carrick-on-Shannon/Frenchark road through Cortober is due to sewer laying for the Cortober sewerage scheme. It is understood from Roscommon County Council that they intend to complete the road restoration this month.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Has the Minister driven over this road lately?

I have not, no.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Would the Minister avail of an opportunity of looking at it because it is absolutely impassable? It is a mass of holes and a danger to people and vehicles.

I understand that the county council have the matter well in hand and that in any event they are ensuring that the matter will be put right within the next month. Of course, it is very difficult to carry out such an operation without having disruptions, particularly in the laying of sewage pipes.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Would the Minister take it from me that it appears to be a mass of potholes rather than any trench across the road or alongside it?

I am sure the Deputy, being a long time member of a local authority, is well aware that when road works are carried out, before a complete job can be done, there must be subsidence allowed. Otherwise the job will not be a proper one, and it does take time.

(Cavan-Monaghan): The Minister should have a look at it.

He has not time. He is canvassing in Waterford city every week. How could he go up to Leitrim ——

The Deputy is getting worried about Redmond Bridge.
