Vol. 327 No. 12

Written Answers. - Shannon Drainage Survey.

303.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate in relation to the proposed survey on the drainage of the river Shannon: (a) the total amount of money allocated to the scheme; (b) the number of surveyors expected to be employed on the scheme, and where they are to be recruited from; and (c) when it is expected to commence the survey.

The total order of cost for the survey of the river Shannon is in the region of £1 million of which 40 per cent (up to a maximum of IR£400,000) will be made available from the European Regional Development Fund. Expenditure incurred on the survey will be met from subhead G.I of Vote 9, Public Works and Buildings.

Ideally about 20 engineers and technicians would be engaged on the survey at peak in the Office of Public Works. Some of these would be drawn from existing staff and some would be specially recruited. It is expected that the Shannon survey will get under way this year.
