I have approved the provision of a major extension to the secondary school at Goldenbridge Convent, Inchicore, Dublin. My Department authorised the manager on 12 March, 1981 to proceed to the working drawing stage of planning. When the manager has submitted her proposals in this regard, they will receive immediate attention.

311.

asked the Minister for Education if he will provide help towards the provision of a caretaker at Goldenbridge secondary school, Inchicore, Dublin 8.

312.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any plans to improve the grants available to Goldenbridge secondary school, Inchicore, Dublin 8.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 311 and 312 together.

The employment of caretakers in recognised secondary schools would be a matter for the authorities of the schools. The cost of such employment would fall to be met from the capitation grant and grant in lieu of tuition fees payable by my in lieu of tuition fees payable by my Department to the schools.

The grant in lieu of tuition fees is being increased from £70 to £77 per pupil as from the commencement of the school year 1981-82. This improvement in the grant will be payable to Goldenbridge Convent secondary school, Inchicore.

A building grant has been sanctioned for a major extension to Goldenbridge secondary school. The grant to be paid, at 80 per cent of the approved building cost, is the maximum allowable under the scheme of building grants for secondary schools.
