Vol. 328 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dunboyne-Maynooth Road.

363.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the Dunboyne-Maynooth road has yet been classified as a regional road; and the implications of reclassification.

While a provisional selection of roads which will become regional roads has been made in consultation with the local authorities, no formal designation of regional roads has yet been made. It is envisaged that the national and regional roads will broadly replace and correspond with the existing main road system, including trunk and link roads. About 500 miles of existing main roads would not be regional roads, while over 700 miles of non-main roads would become regional roads. The two categories of roads would represent about 18 per cent of the total road network. Any legislation necessary to give statutory effect to the new classification proposed will be introduced in due course.
