Vol. 328 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Lighting Systems.

480.

asked the Minister for the Environment if there are any national or EEC grants available for the provision or improvement of public lighting systems in towns which are not on national primary routes; if the only way of providing such systems is through the rates; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Road grants are made available for approved schemes for the provision or improvement of public lighting systems on main traffic routes in built-up areas. The cost of providing or improving public lighting on other roads is met from the resources of the road authorities supplemented by the annual general (block) grant for road purposes.
