Vol. 328 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Neutron Bomb Siting.

7.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Government's attitude towards the proposed siting of the neutron bomb in EEC member states.

I am not aware that a decision has been taken by any member state of the Community to permit the deployment of the neutron bomb on its territory.

The Government are of course, seriously concerned at the dangers for humanity as a whole which may arise from world tensions and conflicts, especially those involving the larger powers and from the high level of armaments, both nuclear and conventional, in many parts of the world. These dangers are intensified by the competition between larger powers to develop new and even more destructive weapons, as well as the risks of the further proliferation of nuclear weapons.

We hope, therefore, that those countries which are at present in a position to develop and deploy neutron weapons will be able to agree, on a mutually acceptable and effective basis, to halt the development and deployment of such weapons.
