Vol. 328 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Donegal Tidal Protection.

128.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the great need to provide a floodgate system at the mouth of the Leenon River, Clonmany, County Donegal; and if, in view of the difficulties being experienced by farmers in the area who cannot drain their lands because of the severe twice daily tidal flooding he will make funds available to provide tidal protection so that farmers in the area can proceed with land drainage schemes which are badly needed.

While I am aware of the drainage problems in this area, any works by the Commissioners of Public Works there must await a comprehensive scheme for the Leenon catchment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. At this stage I could not say when such a scheme might be undertaken. In the meantime the commissioners have no funds available for the execution of works in advance of a comprehensive scheme.
