Vol. 328 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fire Safety Measures.

449.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that fire officers are now recommending that buildings be treated with fire proof paint; and if he will advise where the paint is available as this product is not manufactured in Ireland.

I understand that there are a number of brands of paint which may be used for fireproofing but that use of such paint is likely to be required by a fire officer only in circumstances where more effective precautions might not be practicable or where it might provide some additional safeguard. I am not aware of any particular case in which use of such paint has been recommended. I am advised by the Irish Goods Council that this type of paint is not at present manufactured in Ireland. It is possible, however, to obtain it from firms who would import it in the same way as other components for the building industry which are not manufactured here. I would expect that any fire officer requiring use of such paint would be able to provide information as to where it might be obtained.
