Vol. 328 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Barracks Accommodation.

4.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware of widespread dissatisfaction regarding the standard of accommodation in McKee Barracks, Dublin; whether any general review of living accommodation for families is under way; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While the accommodation in McKee Barracks, Dublin, is generally satisfactory, there is need for improvement to modern standards in regard to billets and canteen facilities.

A programme of improvements to billet accommodation is in progress. These improvements include the sub-division of large rooms into cubicles, the provision of individual bedhead lights with shaver sockets, and modernising of heating, sanitary and ablution facilities. The first phase of this programme has been completed and it is proposed to commence the second phase this year.

The men's canteen is being reroofed by outside contract and when this work has been completed the interior will be modernised.

The married quarters at Blackhorse Avenue were build in 1954 to local authority housing standards. The question of effecting certain improvements to these quarters is under consideration.

Would the Minister consider a meeting between the appropriate agency dealing with McKee Barracks and the families concerned? There is dissatisfaction with both the level of maintenance and the entire tenancy arrangements in relation to these houses. The Minister mentioned that the married quarters were built to 1954 standards, but much has happened since them.

Yes, we will do that.
